Anna’s Journey to Recovery

Anna & Maggie

My name is Anna. I have suffered several brain injuries in my life, from mild concussions to most recently, a stroke. But my history of brain injuries is not the most important part of my story – it’s my journey to recovery.

I was quite proud of my brain before a stroke impaired my ability to see, process information, and speak confidently. Activities that were once effortless, like reading, writing, and carrying on a conversation, were suddenly overwhelming. I was no longer able to work or easily perform daily tasks that enabled me to provide for myself and participate as a contributing community member.

The loss of these abilities left me isolated and dramatically affected my sense of identity. Depression set in and I began to feel that less rather than more lay ahead for me. I was so wrong!

It’s hard to describe the immense gift I was given when I walked through Schurig Center’s doors. I have greatly benefitted from many of the Center’s services, including the Therapeutic Program, support groups, cognitive training, resource referrals, and visits with a neuropsychologist. At the Center, I am accepted as I am and helped to adapt to the changes in my life.

Schurig Center not only improved my life. . . it saved my life!
They helped me improve my abilities and explore the possibilities in front of me, as I am now.

Schurig Center’s staff worked with me to create an individualized plan to meet the needs of my unique combination of disabilities. I have been improving remarkably ever since.

As I recovered, I transitioned from being a client to volunteering at Schurig Center as a teaching assistant. Today, I lead art classes on my own and am looking forward to returning to work one day. I am also able to live independently again, which I love. The Center’s services along with the support of my family have been critical to my recovery. I cannot say enough about how Schurig Center has improved my life and the lives of those who care about me.

Schurig Center was there for me when I needed it most. We need you! I hope you’ll join us in making a difference and donate today. We are all in this community together and we need one another. You can be a hero to hundreds of survivors this year who rely on Schurig Center for continued rehabilitation and healing.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Anna
