Schurig Center is currently providing some of our classes on-site, but many of our programs are also offered remotely via Zoom or phone. All of our classes are facilitated by trained professionals with experience in the field of brain injury or whose training is applicable to the needs of our clients. Services are offered at affordable rates and scholarships are available by application for those in need.

Aphasia Communication Group
Do you have trouble expressing yourself?
Do feel that you are misunderstood or not heard?
Would you like to speak with more confidence?
Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed during conversations?
This group can help! This 10-week program provides the opportunity for individuals who have experienced a stroke or other neurological impairment to practice and develop communication and cognitive skills in a supportive environment. Each participant will be evaluated to assess his or her unique needs and to set personal goals. Topics covered include:
- Engaging in conversation
- Body language
- Communication strategies
- Listening skills
- Connections with friends, family, and your community
Facilitator
Kalynn Stewart, MS/CCC-SLP, a licensed speech therapist specializing in stroke and brain injuries. Kalynn has worked in rehabilitation of individuals with complex neurological impairments in the hospital, outpatient, and community setting for over 20 years.

Art Therapy: Creating Connections Through Art & Community
Did you know that creating art has many benefits?

This 10-week class for brain injury survivors is a creative journey of personal exploration using a variety of art materials. This class is designed to aid self-expression, increase communication and social interaction, build self-confidence, improve memory, and help with stress management.
Facilitator
Midge Casler, MA. Midge is the Art Program Director at Schurig Center, where she has run art groups for 10 years. She uses the art process to help people navigate the challenges they often experience due to an injury, while fostering a sense of safety in a supportive community.

CogEX Computer-Based Class
Offered in a small group setting, this class aims to improve cognitive abilities with the use of computer-based exercises that target logic, memory, attention, and concentration. Programs are tailored by the instructor to meet each student’s unique needs and goals. This program is for people with any type of brain injury who want to improve their skills and abilities in a fun, interactive environment.

CogSMART: Cognitive System Management & Rehabilitation Therapy
A program designed to help people with cognitive impairments perform better in everyday activities and reach their goals pertaining to school, work, social functioning, and daily living. CogSMART is a form of cognitive training to help people improve their skills in:
- Prospective memory (remembering to do things)
- Attention and concentration
- Learning and memory
- Problem-solving
- Planning and organization
- Cognitive flexibility
CogSMART uses compensatory strategy training, rather than extensive drills. This approach helps make these cognitive strategies become habits, so they can be used automatically when they are needed in the real world.

CORE Program
A unique combination of therapeutic classes to help participants enhance their abilities, create relationships, and adjust to life after injury. Modalities include expressive art therapy, communication, life skills building, support group, and others. Participants enroll in classes of their choice. This program addresses the long-term functional needs of each participant and classes are designed to be interconnected and to build upon skills learned in each class. This program provides an individual with the opportunity to:
- Improve interpersonal and communication skills
- Learn how to manage behavioral challenges
- Learn strategies to adjust to life post injury
- Improve core life skills
- Increase community engagement and social inclusion
Classes are offered throughout the day, Monday to Thursday. Enrollment fees for the CORE Program may be North Bay Regional Center and Golden Gate Regional Center eligible.
Facilitators
Midge Casler, MA and Andriana Kaplan, BA Midge Casler is the Art Program Director at Schurig Center, where she has run art groups for 10 years. Andriana Kaplan is a graduate of the State University of New York and Empire State College, where she majored in Community and Human Services with a minor in Disabilities Studies. She has worked in the helping field for several years, including as a senior employment specialist and case manager.

Post-Concussion Education Class
Have you suffered a concussion and experienced any of the following symptoms? Headache, dizziness, sleep disturbance, mood changes, or trouble with memory and concentration. These can be signs of post concussion syndrome. This program will help you navigate the healing process from concussion through educational information offered in a supportive group setting.
Facilitator
Dr. Jim Wilson, PhD, a licensed neuropsychologist specializing in concussion and brain injury for almost 30 years.
