For Marin donors looking to support health equity and access to care; rehabilitation; disability services; older adults; caregiver support; and community-based health services Schurig Center offers a specialized opportunity to make a local impact.
An Important Local Mission That Often Goes Unseen
Marin is home to many wonderful charities doing important work. Schurig Center is unique. We are the only nonprofit in the area dedicated solely to helping people affected by brain injury, like concussion or stroke, thrive after medical care ends.
Schurig Center began with one Mill Valley mother’s determination to ensure no family faced brain injury alone. After her 14-year-old daughter, Lisé, sustained a traumatic brain injury in a 1975 car accident, Karen Schurig experienced firsthand the lack of resources available to survivors and caregivers. In 1985, she founded Marin Brain Injury Network, which grew into today’s Schurig Center, providing continued rehabilitation, hope, and community for people affected by brain injury.
Brain injury is more common than many people realize.
Yet it remains an under recognized and underfunded cause.
Brain injury can happen to anyone, at any age. It can result from a car accident, fall, sports injury, stroke, brain aneurysm, tumor, infection, lack of oxygen or other medical events. Because the effects are often invisible, it can be easy to miss how profoundly an injury can change a person’s life. Memory, communication, emotions, relationships, and the ability to return to work or everyday activities can all be affected, sometimes leading to profound isolation. Its impact extends beyond the individual and can affect entire families. However, few specialized resources are available to help them navigate these challenges.
We Fill an Important Gap Between Medical Care and Life After Injury
The hospital may treat the emergency. Recovery and a return to daily living is what comes next. Schurig Center provides an array of 12 services, including rehabilitation, support groups, brain injury education, and resources, that help survivors and their families adjust to their “new normal” and feel less alone. From our center in Larkspur, we serve people over 550 people each year from throughout Marin, Sonoma, San Francisco, and the greater Bay Area.
Your support ensures that when medical treatment ends, recovery does not have to.
