Caring for Someone with a Brain Injury Can Feel Overwhelming
When someone you love experiences a brain injury, concussion, or stroke, life can change in an instant. Family members often become caregivers, helping their loved one navigate changes in memory, communication, emotions, behavior, and daily life – all while balancing their own work, relationships, health, and personal responsibilities. Over time, these demands can lead to stress, burnout, isolation, and uncertainty. But, you don’t have to navigate caregiving alone.
At Schurig Center, we understand that brain injury affects the entire family. Our Caregiver Support Groups provide a welcoming community where caregivers can connect with others who understand their experiences, gain practical strategies, and find encouragement throughout the recovery journey. We serve families in Marin, Sonoma, San Francisco, and the greater Bay Area.

Benefits of a Brain Injury Caregiver Support Group
Connect with Others Who Understand
One of the greatest challenges caregivers face is feeling alone. Friends and family members may offer support, but they may not fully understand the unique challenges that come with brain injury recovery. In a caregiver support group, participants connect with others who have experienced similar challenges and can share their concerns, frustrations, questions, and successes in a safe and supportive environment.
Learn Practical Strategies for Everyday Challenges
Brain injury can affect many areas of life, including memory, communication, emotional regulation, problem-solving, and independence. Caregivers often need new tools and strategies to support their loved one while also protecting their own well-being. Support group discussions provide opportunities to learn about:
- Understanding changes after brain injury
- Improving communication
- Managing difficult behaviors
- Supporting independence
- Navigating emotional changes
- Finding community resources
- Balancing caregiving with personal responsibilities
Support Your Emotional Health
Caregivers often focus so much on their loved one’s recovery that they overlook their own needs. A support group provides a space to acknowledge the emotional impact of caregiving, share experiences, and receive encouragement. Connecting with others can help caregivers:
- Reduce feelings of isolation
- Gain confidence in their caregiving role
- Feel heard and understood
- Develop healthier coping strategies
- Build resilience for the challenges ahead
Find Hope Through Shared Experiences
Every brain injury recovery journey is different, but caregivers often find comfort in hearing from others who have faced similar circumstances. Sharing experiences, celebrating progress, and learning from one another can provide hope during difficult moments. At Schurig Center, we believe caregivers are an essential part of the recovery process and deserve support, resources, and a community of their own.
