ConcussionSmart Marin is a community coalition committed to the health of Marin’s youth. Recent reporting by the Marin Grand Jury and the Marin IJ’s editorial voiced concern about Marin’s student concussion response. The coalition ConcussionSmart Marin (‘CSM’) was formed in response to the Grand Jury’s report in 2016 and has been working to address the recommendations of the grand jury’s report since that time. CSM has developed a program for middle school and high school students based on best-practice in other states and from existing models found in California. The program began roll-out to the schools in March during Brain Injury Awareness Month. The goals of CSM are to: 1) Establish a standard level of care in the assessment and treatment of concussion/mild traumatic brain injury; 2) To help in the prevention and awareness of student concussion; and, 3) Ensure schools and student athletic organizations are in compliance with current law.

Connecting with Our Marine Life Community
Schurig Center’s Therapeutic Program participants recently visited the Marine Mammal Center, a nonprofit veterinary research and educational center located in Sausalito. Since 1975, the Marine Mammal Center has helped promote ocean conservation through marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation.
Planned at the suggestion of our Therapeutic Program participants, our outing to the Marine Mammal Center was both educational and FUN! In addition to our special “V.I.P. Behind-The-Scenes” tour where we actually got to meet some of the Center’s current patients, participants had fun socializing over lunch with a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean while taking lots of great photos, and practicing their money handling skills at the gift shop. Community Integration Program Enjoys First Outing to Marin Humane
Schurig Center’s staff and participants kicked off our new Community Integration Program with an outing to Marin Humane in Novato.
The gang began their day by sharing lunch together and visiting with some of the furry friends found at Marin Humane. The group then had the opportunity to view their artwork, which had been on display at Marin Humane throughout August as part of Schurig Center’s “Healing Through Pawsitivity” Art Show. The show featured animal drawings and mixed media artworks created by artists in Schurig Center’s Therapeutic Art Studio as well as drawings by long-time volunteer Paul Miller, who guest lectures and teaches animal drawing groups. To commemorate the art show a book was created, named “Animal Tales,” featuring some of the paintings and stories from the show. After viewing their artwork, the group did a book reading together of “Animal Tales” and then gathered to watch a movie together complete with popcorn. [Read more…]
