Art Inspired by Our Garden

Recently The Green Thumb Club explored art inspired by the beautiful garden that surrounds Schurig Center. After creating a spontaneous table garden using items hand-selected by each person, the group collaboratively composed this poem of appreciation for the gifts of the garden…

Appreciation for Our Garden

The love of nature, all out doors, surround.
Looking at flowers reminds me of painting
because of all the beautiful colors.
It’s so lovely because the flowers are gorgeous
and all the flowers are smiling at you.
Our garden brings together so many beautiful flowers
in the comings and goings in a kaleidoscope.
Shape and shades of rainbow colors.

A Taste of Italy

August 22, 2016

The tomato plants in Schurig Center’s therapeutic garden are producing a bounty of fruit this year! Today the participants in our therapeutic program harvested the basil and tomatoes from the garden and then prepared tomato mozzarella tarts and tomato basil bruschetta. Bellisimo!

Once a month, Schurig Center participants don their chef hats and embark into a world filled with measuring, stirring, baking, cooking and tasting. In Life Skills Cooking Class, participants come together to learn and grow through the art of preparing delicious food while also rebuilding and strengthening cognitive and motor skills.

Digging for Treasure

July 28, 2016

Our Therapeutic Program participants recently got to experience the joy of harvesting potatoes they planted months ago. They unearthed quite a haul!

The garden that surrounds BINBA provides horticultural therapy for our participants. Horticultural therapy incorporates plants and plant-related activities to help improve the body, mind and spirit of the individual, and is an accepted and effective tool that offers cognitive, social, psychological and physical benefits as well as improving one’s quality of life.

Gardening can bring about surprising results, both in improving motor skills and in reducing stress. BINBA participants are provided a hands-on connection with the natural environment and life cycle. By caring for plants, individuals realize that they can have an impact on improving the ecosystem.
