Celebrating Our Veterans

Our fabulous veterans Tod Fleming, John Nelson and Scott Parkhurst

Leading up to Veterans Day, we honored our friends here at the Schurig Center who have proudly served our country with a special Veterans Day celebration.

The Center looked festive with lots of red, white and blue decorations and of course, “Old Glory.” Therapeutic Program participants had the opportunity to help create artwork and design the layout for our special “Thank You for Your Service” display table, which was used to showcase TONS of great photos, medals and memorabilia from our three veterans who proudly served in the Army and Navy respectively. Community Integration Program Enjoys First Outing to Marin Humane

Schurig Center’s staff and participants kicked off our new Community Integration Program with an outing to Marin Humane in Novato.

The group then had the opportunity to view their artwork, which had been on display at Marin Humane throughout August as part of Schurig Center’s “Healing Through Pawsitivity” Art Show. The show featured animal drawings and mixed media artworks created by artists in Schurig Center’s Therapeutic Art Studio as well as drawings by long-time volunteer Paul Miller, who guest lectures and teaches animal drawing groups. To commemorate the art show a book was created, named “Animal Tales,” featuring some of the paintings and stories from the show. After viewing their artwork, the group did a book reading together of “Animal Tales” and then gathered to watch a movie together complete with popcorn. [Read more…]

Animal Tales – Celebrating the Healing Power of Animals

Schurig Center is pleased to share “Animal Tales” a collection of animal mixed media artworks and writing created by artists in our Art Studio. Artists spent art sessions creating the images and writings for this book. The artists reflected on the importance of animals in their lives, and how they provide friendship, inspiration, healing, and unconditional love. During the process of creating the images, stories, and reflections, the artists shared thought provoking experiences of the healing impact that animals have in their lives. Enjoy!
