Art Inspired by Our Garden

Recently The Green Thumb Club explored art inspired by the beautiful garden that surrounds Schurig Center. After creating a spontaneous table garden using items hand-selected by each person, the group collaboratively composed this poem of appreciation for the gifts of the garden…

Appreciation for Our Garden

The love of nature, all out doors, surround.
Looking at flowers reminds me of painting
because of all the beautiful colors.
It’s so lovely because the flowers are gorgeous
and all the flowers are smiling at you.
Our garden brings together so many beautiful flowers
in the comings and goings in a kaleidoscope.
Shape and shades of rainbow colors.

Digging for Treasure

July 28, 2016

Our Therapeutic Program participants recently got to experience the joy of harvesting potatoes they planted months ago. They unearthed quite a haul!

The garden that surrounds BINBA provides horticultural therapy for our participants. Horticultural therapy incorporates plants and plant-related activities to help improve the body, mind and spirit of the individual, and is an accepted and effective tool that offers cognitive, social, psychological and physical benefits as well as improving one’s quality of life.

Gardening can bring about surprising results, both in improving motor skills and in reducing stress. BINBA participants are provided a hands-on connection with the natural environment and life cycle. By caring for plants, individuals realize that they can have an impact on improving the ecosystem.

New Additions in the Garden

Our hand railing has gone from bare and grey to being covered in elaborate yarn designs, thanks to the handiwork and vision of one of our participants. The yarn has been carefully selected for its texture and color to accent the flowers and foliage of the garden. We have also watched on in anticipation as a new insect habitat has been erected. This project was inspired by similar habitats that our Marin Master Gardeners saw in England. We have been tossing around names for this new insect habitat, what do you think…Bug Hotel, Bug Hub, Habitat for Bug-manity?
